The following statement, drafted by the Exhibit Industry Congress (EIC), revises its statement of April 1991. This statement addresses the issues of material handling services that were not clear or difficult to implement under the previous statement. The intent of this new statement is to make the suggested shipping categories easier to understand and use. EIC encourages the use of the categories that are being recommended. The following exhibit industry associations participated in the meeting that produced this new statement: EDPA, ESCA, HCEA, IAEM, TSEA, and SISO. It has been endorsed by EDPA, HCEA, IAAM, IAEM, TSEA, NACS, and SISO.
Statement
Over the past decade, the exposition industry has adopted a practice whereby freight shipping via van line is commonly subject to a "Van Line Surcharge." The term itself, "Van Line Surcharge," is now recognized to be a misnomer, and its use should be eliminated from the industry.
Instead, the industry should adapt the following terminology for clarification of rate schedules, applying it equitably to freight shipments, regardless of the transportation mode:
Crated and/or Skidded Shipments
Includes shipments that are in crates or on skids, and that can be unloaded at the dock with no additional handling required (such as ground loading or side door loading).
Mixed Shipments (Crated and Uncrated)
Includes shipments that contain less than 50% uncrated materials that are not in crates, cases or boxes and/or unskidded machinery without lifting bars or hooks. Also includes shipments that are loaded and/or packed in such a manner as to require additional handling (such as ground loading or side door loading).
Uncrated, Unskidded or Wrapped Shipments
Includes shipments that contain 50% or more uncrated materials that are not in crates, cases or boxes and/or unskidded machinery without lifting bars or hooks. Also includes shipments that are loaded and/or packed in such a manner as to require additional handling (such as ground loading or side door loading).
