* EXPLOSIVE GROWTH IN CHINA: Exhibition World (3/07) reports that China’s exhibition industry hosted more than 3,800 trade shows in 2006, an increase of 800 events over 2004. These generated U$ 1.8 billion in direct sales. Also, two hundred exhibition organizers pledged to stamp out intellectual property rights infringements at their events – in compliance with a 2006 law requiring organizers with events lasting three or more days to set up an office to handle any infringement complaints. Then I read in the Los Angeles Times (3/20/07) that China is planning to build a jetliner to compete with Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. With this growth rate, the sky is the limit for the Chinese trade show industry!

* TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TRADE SHOWS: Julia O'Connor (Successful Meetings, 2/27/07) suggests five ways to improve your staff performance:
1) Define the skills needed in the booth before you staff it. Assess duties and time required, not just the show hours. Consider it a short-term assignment and ask for volunteers. And what management level is appropriate to interact with show attendees?
2) Interview applicants for the job. Each staff member should be the best person to represent your firm.
3) Look for listening skills. Trade shows are all about very brief conversations. The most critical skills are to listen closely and know the product -- or who is the company’s go-to person at the show.
4) Ask for feedback – not just from staff, but get reviews by people who stopped at your booth. Learn how your staff assisted them and did they have a good experience. Will they do business with you because of the staff?
5) Recognize a job well done. Trade shows are physically and mentally demanding, so offer incentives for the exhibit staff.

* GREEN GOOD NEWS: Marriott International, Inc. has joined forces with Clean Up the World, a global environmental organization with 35 million volunteers in 120 countries. The new partnership was launched in San Francisco, during a Save the Bay clean-up effort involving more than 50 Marriott general managers. (USAEMAIL 2/27/07)

* AMERICAN FACTOID: Interesting security news for persons living in this country on a Green Card or Visa: you must carry your documentation, including your passport, when visiting any city within 50 miles of the U.S. border.

* GLOBAL FACTOID: Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA) launched a new advertising campaign with the theme "Success through Fairs.” It is aimed at small and medium-sized companies, and the core message is that trade shows lead to success because a) innovations can be presented there to an international professional audience, b) fairs enable direct face-to-face contact, c) trade show visitors are in search of new suppliers, and d) attendance consists mainly of decision-makers. Advertisements will be in national daily newspapers and their online portals, business magazines, and backlit billboards on intercity express trains. (m+a | UFI Exhibition Newsletter 3/7/07)
