Exhibition Industry Grows 4.8 Percent in 2006

According to the fourth annual CEIR Index Report, a leading provider of exhibition industry performance data, the exhibition industry grew 4.8 percent in 2006 over 2005 levels, just slightly below the 5.8 percent gain posted by the industry in 2005 versus 2004, but marking the fourth consecutive year of industry growth. Additionally, the results for the industry surpassed overall U.S. economic growth of 3.4 percent in 2006.

Nearly 300 events contributed data for this report, and the results show that the exhibition industry is healthy, vibrant and growing. As an objective measure of the annual performance of the exhibition industry, the CEIR Index measures year-over-year changes in four key metrics to determine overall performance: Net Square Feet; Attendees; Exhibitors; and Revenue.

Over the course of the period covered by this report (2000-2006), all four exhibition industry metrics rose on a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) basis: Net Square Feet (+3.6 percent); Revenue (+2.6 percent); Attendees (+1.6 percent); and Exhibitors (+1.5 percent). In 2006, Revenue increased 9.7 percent, followed by 4.6 percent, 3.8 percent and 1.3 percent gains in Attendees, Net Square Feet and Exhibitors, respectively.

The CEIR Index provides exhibition industry performance across 11 key industry sectors: Professional Business Services; Consumer and Retail Trade; Sports and Entertainment; Food; Government; Building and Construction; Industrial and Manufacturing; Communications and Information Technology; Medical and Health Care; Raw Materials and Science; and Transportation.

Several market sectors drove growth for the industry from 2000 to 2006, including Building and Construction (+5.4 percent CAGR); Sports and Entertainment (+5.3 percent CAGR); Transportation (+4.8 percent); and Medical and Health Care (+4.0 percent). In examining the 11 industry sectors covered by the CEIR Index, all showed increases in Net Square Feet in 2006, with the exceptions being Consumer and Retail Trade and Communications and Information Technology. From 2005 to 2006, exhibition industry growth was led by Professional Business Services (+11.1 percent); Raw Materials and Science (+10 percent); Transportation (+9.4 percent); Building and Construction (+9.2 percent); and Food (+7.4 percent).

Total growth rates in the other industry sectors over the period were as follows: Building and Construction (+9.2 percent); Food (+7.4 percent); Communications and Information Technology (+3.4 percent); Medical and Health Care (+3.0 percent); Industrial and Manufacturing (+3.0 percent); Sports and Entertainment (+2.9 percent); Government (+1.0 percent); and Consumer and Retail Trade (+0.1 percent). With a 7.4 percent gain in 2006, the Food sector displayed the greatest turnaround among sectors, as it posted a 10.9 percent decline in 2005 versus 2004 levels.

Veris Consulting, a leading exhibition industry research consultancy, collected the data from the nearly 300 events and created the CEIR Index results. The Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc. (JEGI), a leading investment banking firm for the media and information industries, provided year-over-year analysis of exhibition performance for each of the 11 industry sectors covered by this report. Camilli Economics, an independent economic advisory services firm, wrote the Economic Overviews and Outlooks for each of the 11 industry sectors. Trade Show Executive, an award-winning magazine covering the trade show industry, provided design services and oversaw production of the final report.

The full report will be officially announced at the SISO CEO Summit, which is being held March 25-27 in Miami, Fla. The CEIR Index can be purchased through www.ceir.org.

Stem Cell Summit Launched
Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Burrill Life Sciences Media Group and Genetics Policy Institute Form Collaboration

The Burrill Life Sciences Media Group, the Genetics Policy Institute (GPI), and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) have joined forces to produce an annual global conference on stem cell research and regenerative medicine. The “Stem Cell Summit” is scheduled for October 2-3, 2007 in Boston, MA.

The Summit builds on a highly successful conference inspired by business and academic leaders in 2006 jointly sponsored by the Massachusetts General Hospital Innovation Fund and the HSCI. It brought together leading researchers, patient advocates, biotechnology executives, experts in policy, law and ethics along with key decision-makers to chart the course so that stem cell technologies will receive proper funding, flourish and fulfill the promise for cures. The Summit seeks to extend the reach and impact of that event by partnering with the leader in the life sciences conference field and the leader in stem cell policy debate. The organizers jointly recognize that the complex field of stem cell research requires the interaction of science and education, policy and advocacy, and commercial interests for ultimate success.

“GPI’s partnering with the Burrill Life Sciences Media Group and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute will help energize the entire community by connecting patients with leading researchers and other experts in related fields of policy, law, ethics and commerce and thereby advance our mutual goal to derive treatments and cures sooner rather than later," said Bernard Siegel, founder and executive director of the Genetics Policy Institute.

“This event is unique because patients around the world are worried about the fate of stem cell research and have begun participating in the debate as never before. The promise of stem cell treatment lies not in the halls of politics but in the hearts of people,” said G. Steven Burrill, CEO of Burrill & Company. Brock Reeve, Executive Director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute noted that, “the mission of HSCI is to develop therapies for key diseases.

So how swiftly can we move from “bench to bedside”? HSCI was established because this is not just a scientific question – we must connect scientific research and clinical practice with the fields of law, philosophy, and policy. This meeting will help bring us closer to that goal,” added Mr. Reeve.

Morial Convention Center President/General Fore Resigns
42-Year Industry Trailblazer Leaves on a Career High Note

The Ernest N. Morial New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority, the Morial Convention Center’s governing board, has officially announced the resignation of President/General Manager and Authority’s Executive Vice President Jimmie D. Fore, effective April 1, after 16 years of service.

“Our entire industry is honored to have had Jimmie’s leadership throughout the years, particularly during the recovery aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,” said Warren L. Reuther, Jr., the Authority’s president of the board. “Thanks to his management, the Convention Center completed an ambitious reopening to welcome the return of major convention business to New Orleans after Katrina. He has also assembled one of the most renowned and experienced venue teams, which will ensure a smooth transition moving forward.”

Fore leaves a legacy of success from a career that has spanned 42 years and included CVBs and the management of facilities in Houston, Chicago and New Orleans. Since the fall of 1991, he has brought prestige, a wealth of experience and extensive contacts to the Morial Center from his close ties with the nation’s largest trade associations, convention executives and exhibit managers. The Center also enjoyed peak occupancy and attendance growth on his watch and completed the Phase III expansion in 1999, which opened with high occupancy levels and propelled the Center to being the sixth largest convention center in the nation.

"Jimmie Fore has been a legend in New Orleans and in the convention industry for 42 years," said J.Stephen Perry, president and CEO of the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau. "There has not been a more professionally-managed convention center in America than the Ernest Morial Convention Center New Orleans, thanks to Jimmie Fore's leadership. We thank him for his extraordinary service to New Orleans and our most important industry."

ITN Launches bCardMobile Network
Use of Cellular Network Decreases Service Costs for Exhibitors

ITN International, a developer of data collection and management tools for trade shows, events and experiential marketing applications, has announced the launch of the bCardMobile Network. Now data from all ITN lead devices, PocketLead, MultiLead and PaperLead, is uploaded to the ITN ASP4Leads web site in real-time via the cellular network.

The benefit of using the bCardMobile Network is that there are no connection or installation costs associated with transmitting over the cellular network. This is a substantial cost savings versus setting up a wireless network or having an internet connection installed in a trade show exhibit. Leads are uploaded continuously as long as there is a connection. When there is no connection, the units continue to collect data. The upload resumes automatically as soon as the connection is restored.

The bCardMobile Network can be used to collect attendee and lead data, to control access for educational and breakout sessions and to control access to the show floor. RSA Conference used the network to control session access for approximately 14,000 attendees who had a choice of approximately 50 different sessions daily for three days-without requiring a single hardwire connection.

"PocketLead running on bCardMobile made tracking and scanning attendees very easy for us, and seamless for our attendees," says Robert Lowe, vice president - event architect of Nth Degree Events, manager of the RSA Conference. "Gathering the information in real time enabled us to use the data instantaneously for a variety of purposes including sending a custom session evaluation form via email to participants immediately after the session and modifying the next day's session schedule based on analysis of the current day."

"The bCardMobile Network fulfills exhibitors' and expo managers' need for a cost-efficient and installation-free means to achieve reliable data collection and transmission," adds Ivan Lazarev, president of ITN. "The savings have been invaluable in enabling our clients to utilize state-of-the-art technology without going over budget."
