Windy City News
Bits From Bob, June 1, 2007
* BIG TROUBLE AHEAD IN BIG APPLE? A proposed marshaling garage that is part of the planned $2 billion expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is causing lots of angst. This facility would vertically stack hundreds of trucks, using ramps within the building, prior to delivering exhibitor freight to the Center. The plan is considered so flawed by leading exhibition organizers and general service contractors that they formed “Friends of Javits” to convince both the state and the city to adopt a separate marshaling yard. Their preferred option is to continue using the current marshaling facility located on land between 33rd and 34th Streets. The “Friends” fear that the multi-story garage will impede the move-in and move-out processes -- and skyrocketing labor costs could drive events out of the city. “The garage will increase the cost by about 40 percent over what it is now,” predicted Reed Exhibitions Senior Vice President Ken McAvoy. (Trade Show Executive Magazine, 5/07)

* QUOTABLE: “The significant problems of the day cannot be solved with the same consciousness that created them.” Albert Einstein

* SOLID BENCHMARKS IN 2006: Exhibit Surveys, Inc. annually compiles statistical data on attendees and exhibitors from its in-depth surveys of 55 shows in various industries. Most metrics were up in 2006 and early indications are that 2007 will be another good year. Here’s a snapshot of the results:

-Average traffic density score (the number of attendees per 100 square feet of exhibit space) increased from 2.3 in 2005 to 2.4 in 2006

-Attendees spent an average of 8.5 hours on the show floor in 2006, compared with 7.8 hours in 2005

-Forty-three percent of booth visitors said they plan to buy an exhibitor's product or service within the 12 months following the show

-Seventy-nine percent of attendees who visited an exhibit in 2006 had no contact with that company within the previous 12 months

-Among visitors to individual booths, 82 percent are interested in the product or service displayed and 78 percent have a buying influence for the exhibitor's product or service

-Attendees spent an average of 2.3 days visiting exhibits in 2006, compared with 2.4 in 2005

-Exhibitors are spending more to reach customers at shows: companies spent $129 for each customer who entered their booth in 2006, compared with $108 in 2005

-Exhibitors spent $223 for each customer who talked to a staff member in 2006, compared with $214 in 2005. (All results from EXPO Magazine, 5/07)

* FIRST QUARTER UPS AND DOWNS: Tradeshow Week Quarterly Report of Tradeshow Statistics found a 2.8 percent increase in net square footage for shows in the first three months of this year, compared with a 2.7 percent growth in 2006. The number of exhibiting companies grew a mere 0.3 percent, compared with last year’s 1.4 percent. However, attendance dropped 1.6 percent when compared to last year. (Tradeshow Week, 5/21/07)
Note: in The 2007 Tradeshow Week 200 Analysis, Michael Hughes, associate publisher and director of research services at TSW, attributes the slowing attendance growth to rising hotel rates.

* AFTERWORD: "Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last you create what you will." George Bernard Shaw

That’s it for June. Peace!
