* CHANGE IS IN THE AIR: First-quarter U.S. economic growth was a mere 0.6 percent. While that's not a recession, it is the smallest increase in four years -- and a sharp decline from the fourth quarter of 2006, according to the respected UCLA Anderson Forecast. (Los Angeles Times, 6/19/07)
Surprisingly, online retail is experiencing a slowdown in several major sectors, like books, computer peripherals, tickets, and office supplies. Consumers may be having Internet fatigue and are simply changing their buying habits. While it’s not a “Dot Calm” era, analysts say it is a turning point and growth will continue to slow through this decade. (New York Times, 6/19-07)
Michael Hughes, Assoc. Publisher & Director of Research Services at Tradeshow Week, further points out that power is shifting to attendees at exhibitions. They are "higher-level decision makers," "more knowledgeable due to information available on the Internet," and further along in the buying process by the time they come to events. This is from recent exhibitor surveys.
These trends are impacting what we do in our industry. A strong economy usually heralds a successful year, so let’s hope for an upturn in the last six months.
* QUOTABLE: "The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight but has no vision." Helen Keller
* GREEN GOOD NEWS: GES Exposition Services, Freeman, and Stetson Convention Services are offering exhibitors more green options than ever before. Here are some examples: table coverings and wastebasket liners made from 100 percent corn and are totally biodegradable, compostable and polyethylene-free; carpet padding made with 100 percent recycled fibers; exhibitor kits on CD, not paper; placing orders online instead of using paper forms; cardboard wastebaskets made of recycled natural products; muslin drapes produced from cotton; and carpet that has 25 percent recycled content, as well as being 100 percent recyclable back into carpet fiber. (Tradeshow Week, 4/16/07)
* ROAD WARRIOR UPDATE: If you’re flying on Frontier Airlines, you better have plastic payment if you want a cocktail, DirecTV or pay-per-view movies. No more cash, just credit or debit cards are accepted. (Meetings & Conventions, 6/07)
* The average cost of a U.S. hotel room has topped $100, a major milestone, according to Smith Travel Research. The firm says the average rate for the first four months of the year was $102.79, a 5.9 percent increase from the first four months of 2006. Averages can be deceiving, as the average rate in New York City in April was $254. (m+a/UFI exhibition newsletter, 6/20/07)
* You can now use the sun’s energy to recharge almost anything with the cellphone-sized Solio. The three solar panel unit unfolds like a flower and can be attached to iPods, cellphones, PDAs and hand-held computer games. More info: www.solio.com (Los Angeles Times, 5/6/07)
* AFTERWORD: "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." Joseph Campbell
That’s it for July. Enjoy the 4th. Peace!
Bits from Bob is celebrating its 15th year!
