* BMA’s GOOD NEWS/ BAD NEWS: Trade shows are now #1 in BtoB marketing communications budgets (23.6 percent), yet nearly two-thirds of exhibiting companies spend less than 20 percent of their time developing event strategies. This is the key finding from the Business Marketing Association (BMA) and Catalyst Events (CE) recent survey, based on BtoB Magazine polling 847 BMA corporate members and 9,009 BtoB Magazine subscribers. The survey also reveals that half of the companies say "they're not seeing results from trade shows," yet most plan to exhibit at least as much next year. When setting show objectives, 80 percent do so to gather sales leads. Eighty-two percent determine their ROI based on number of leads generated, while 47 percent determine it by the number of visitors at the booth. (EXPOWeb News, 7/19/07)
*TS2 MEMORIES: "Setting Objectives" reminds me of a TS2 story from the 70s, when many "first-ever" exhibitor education programs were being presented by me and my peers: Ron Hardaway, Marti Wolf, Joe Federico, Roger LaForte, Thoburn Stiles, and others. I was pleasantly surprised when Don Walter, then-president of the National Association of Exposition Managers (now IAEE), asked for my “setting objectives” session notes so he could share them with his membership.
The first TS2 meeting I ever attended was also in the 70s in Hartford, CT. Governor Ella Grasso was the keynote speaker. Her presence was highly touted as testimony to our fledgling group’s coming of age in the industry. On the day she was to speak, she was rushed to the hospital and the Lieutenant Governor filled in for her. Great speaker he was not, but we gained needed clout with our industry peers.

* GREEN GOOD NEWS: Nominations are invited for a new IMEX award designed to recognize and encourage meetings industry suppliers who are making innovative efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their operations. Announced by IMEX - incorporating Meetings made in Germany - at the end of its fifth show in Frankfurt, the new Green Supplier Award will be run in partnership with the Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC) and alongside IMEX's established Green Awards - the only ones of their kind for the meetings industry. The annual award is open to any meetings industry supplier that can demonstrate innovative and practical ways in which it has prevented waste and reduced overall environmental impact.
