Travel Leaders Applaud President Bush for Signing Bill Called "Most Significant Travel Reform Since 9/11"
Travel leaders applauded President Bush on August 3, 2007, for signing legislation that contains two provisions that send a more welcoming message to international visitors to the United States, hailing it as "the most significant travel reform since 9/11."
The legislation, which addresses recommendations proposed by the 9/11 Commission, contains a provision to strengthen and expand the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This modernization of the VWP will allow more legitimate business and leisure travelers to visit the United States visa-free, while enhancing security through an air exit tracking system, increasing information sharing between nations and other controls.
The legislation also will provide a more efficient and welcoming arrival process at America’s top 20 overseas inbound airports, which welcome 90 percent of all overseas arrivals to the United States. The program would include enhanced queue management and instructional and welcome videos in the Federal Inspection Services area. In addition, the provision provides for no fewer than 200 additional U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to help alleviate excessive wait times at these airports.
"This important legislation tightens security while allowing for millions more business and leisure travelers from overseas to come to the United States. More visitors will in turn help improve America’s image abroad while at the same time providing thousands more American jobs,” said Jonathan Tisch, Chairman of the Travel Business Roundtable and Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels.
"This is the most significant travel reform since 9/11 and sends a clear message to our friends around the world that we want them to visit and they will have a positive experience when they arrive," said Roger J. Dow, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Travel Industry Association. "We thank President Bush and all of the Congressional leaders who have worked tirelessly to pass this legislation," added Dow.
Legislators who played a significant role in helping pass these provisions include Senators George Voinovich (R-OH), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Ted Stevens (R-AK), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and Ranking Member Susan Collins (R-ME), House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Ranking Member Peter King (R-NY).
Use Event Audits To Help Select the Best Tradeshows
by Glenn Schutz, Manager, Communications
BPA Worldwide
In the ongoing search for revenue growth, today’s advertisers/exhibitors are making strides toward an integrated marketing mix: print, online and face-to-face. But while print and online data are relatively easy to quantify, event data remains somewhat elusive. That’s where the independent event audit proves its value.
Audits have been a standard tool for making print advertising decisions; and website audits are fast becoming the norm to determine traffic volume and ad delivery. Nonetheless, many exhibit managers haven’t been exposed to print or online audits, and while some believe in the importance of event audits, many others have never seen one.
What is an audit? A tradeshow audit is an analysis by an independent, third-party certified auditor of verified show attendance and demographic data that is gathered during the registration process. An audit is census-based, allowing for a full review of the entire database.
Most importantly, event audits — which are completely independent of event management — are standardized so that users can make accurate comparisons between two or more events. The Exhibition & Event Industry Audit Council (EEIAC) has taken further steps by certifying event auditors who meet or exceed the Council’s established standards.
While the event audit is only one part of the exhibitor’s decision process, it provides a solid foundation on which to assess a given show. The addition of research and other metrics brings the picture into even better focus. Exhibit Surveys, Inc. (ESI) is an industry leader when it comes to providing tradeshow survey information. Surveys are sample-based and typically provide more in-depth analysis of attendees, including buying power, audience activity and strategic planning.
In addition to its event survey metrics, ESI in conjunction with the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) has developed a set of pre-event planning and post-event measurement tools for exhibitors. These tools aid exhibitors in their decision to exhibit or return to the show, provide guidance with respect to their marketing investment in areas such as booth size and number of personnel, products/services to be displayed, and measure their performance and potential for ROI from exhibiting.
In 2006, ESI joined with BPA Worldwide to offer Event InsightsSM — a combination of ESI survey data and BPA-audited events. Both ESI and BPA are EEIAC certified.
Of course, it’s not just exhibitors who should be interested in event audits. Many of today’s show organizers are committed to helping exhibitors get the most from their tradeshow investment. Informed show organizers are using a consultative sales approach with their exhibitors to demonstrate how audit and survey data can lead to decisions which maximize the exhibiting experience.

The first of the executive IT summits will be launched in late 2007 and run throughout 2008. Each summit will feature a business-intensive agenda including case study presentations and one-on-one meetings between vendors and attending executives, industry panels, networking events highlighted by an industry awards program, and presentations from the Industry Insights analyst teams.
