Windy City News
Bits from Bob, September 1, 2007
* RECORD 2006 TRADE SHOW SPENDING: The Veronis Suhler and Stevenson Communications Industry Forecast found 2006 exhibition expenditures increased 6.1 percent, to $10.30 billion, over 2005. This reflects the value marketers place on face-to-face contacts and increased travel budgets. Attendance grew 3.1 percent in 2006, down from 3.5 percent in 2005. Total 2007 exhibition spending is expected to grow 6 percent, to $10.92 billion. E-media is the fastest-growing B-to-B sector, growing 25.4 percent in 2006 to $2.34 billion. Note: the exhibition industry is beginning to show signs of deceleration as the economy begins to slow down. (EXPOWeb News, 8/07)

* QUARTERLY REPORT SHOWS GAINS: Tradeshow Week’s Second Quarter Tradeshow Statistics Report (8/20/07) posted solid growth in every area (when compared to the same 2006 quarter): net square feet up 2.2 percent, number of exhibiting firms up 1.9 percent, and attendance up 7.6 percent.

* QUOTABLE: “The new 3 R’s: Reduce your carbon footprint. Reuse. Recycle.” (Newsweek 8/20/07)

* CONFIRMING THE TREND: Major exhibitors pressure event organizers for more control over their participation in trade shows, concludes the newest report from the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR). It examines the role of key exhibitors, analyzes why market leaders are being lured away from exhibiting, and illustrates the impact when one or more key exhibitors terminate involvement. Four case studies and best practices for managing key exhibitor relationships are included. For more info: www.ceir.org.

* GREEN GOOD NEWS: Pouria Abbassi, CEO and General Manager of the Los Angeles Conventions Center has used his background as a Professional Engineer to make that facility an industry leader in green initiatives: “A few years back, we began installing energy-efficient chiller units, as well as solar panels, which supply enough power for about 2,300 homes. We were always a leader with our recycling and waste management operations. Currently, 20 percent of our power is coming from green sources, with the intent to make that 100 percent by next June.” (Trade Show Executive Magazine, 8/07)

* ROAD WARRIOR UPDATE: American Airlines plans to offer wireless, high-speed Internet service to passengers on transcontinental routes, beginning next year. It will be the first such service offered by a U.S. air carrier. (Meeting News, 8/7/07)

* The Department of Transportation reported airline industry's on-time performance in the first six months of the year was the worst in 13 years. In June, nearly a third of domestic flights on major U.S. airlines were late. For international travelers, the situation at London’s Heathrow Airport has reached deplorable conditions, with misrouted or lost bags, missed flights, and mystifying security rules. (Los Angeles Times, 8/25/07)

* AFTERWORD: “If you have the same ideas as everybody else, but have them one week earlier than everyone else, then you will be hailed as a visionary. But if you have them five years earlier, you will be named a lunatic.” Barry Jones, politician, author
