Bits From Bob, October 1, 2007
* LEVERAGING YOUR PRESENCE AT SHOWS: Recent research from Tradeshow Week (8/6/07) indicates that 31 percent of attendees access exhibitors’ storefronts or online booths prior to events. The survey also found that 36 percent of exhibiting companies use lead follow-up services and indicate this is becoming increasingly important to their marketing effort.

Interestingly, 85 percent of show organizers are making money online from banner advertising (mainly from their exhibitor/sponsors), directories, and their newest offerings: exhibitor and/or product search capabilities. A good example of this is Messe Frankfurt’s "Product Pilot," an Internet search platform for buyers seeking specific products or services. The Pilot is composed of 25,000-plus exhibitor listings, which are enrolled at the time they purchase exhibit space by paying a mandatory additional fee. "This is a listing of companies that only exhibit on Frankfurt fairs, which we hope implies the highest quality to prospective buyers," said Michael von Zitzewitz, Board Chairman of Messe Frankfurt. (Trade Show Executive, 3/07)

Finally, 12 percent of the organizers in the TSW survey engage in mobile marketing, i.e. send messages to cell phones, iPods or PDAs. Watch for this to increase significantly in the future.

* QUOTABLE: "Achievement doesn't come from what we do, it comes from who we are." Marianne Williamson

* GREEN GOOD NEWS: Airline emissions are at the top of the agenda of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) meeting in Montreal. The United States opposes EU plans to include foreign airlines in any emissions trading scheme. It wants ICAO to let individual nations decide the best way to manage greenhouse gas emissions from their airlines. But the European Commission, which authored the legislation to include flights coming into and out of the 27-nation bloc starting in 2012, said it will go forward with its proposal. (eTurboNews, 9/17/07)

* EXHIBITOR COSTS RISE: It’s time for the 2008 budget cycle and, no surprise, the average price of labor is up across the United States and Canada. Here are some straight time averages: decorator $65.30, electrician $71.95, forklift with operator $140.82, security guard $22.00. (Tradeshow Week, 6/25/07)

* ROAD WARRIOR UPDATE: Virgin America and AirCell are partnering to offer broadband Internet and instant messaging at 35,000 feet early in 2008.

* PKF Hospitality Research predicts smaller hotel room rate hikes through 2011, which is great news for exhibitors, who endured rate increases in recent years at two or more times the rate of inflation -- resulting in double-digit profitability gains for hotels. For 2008, PKF says the U.S. national occupancy rate will be flat. (EXPOWeb News 9/13/07)

* AFTERWORD: "I don’t trust people who don’t like themselves: 'I don’t like me, but I love you.' There’s an African saying: ‘Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.'" Maya Angelou

That’s it for October. Peace!

Bits from Bob is celebrating its 15th year!
