* B-to-B DECIDERS TRULY VALUE EVENTS: American Business Media and Forrester Research, Inc., just released a comprehensive survey of 816 B-to-B marketers and 878 B-to-B decision makers. The findings are heartening for our industry: 96 percent of the marketers feel events help salespeople engage buyers and 45 percent of the deciders will increase trade show spending within the next two years. Other important findings from the decision makers: 62 percent attend trade shows to do their jobs; 51 percent attended three or more conferences or trade shows in the last year; 45 percent say trade shows are highly effective at informing purchase decisions; 65 percent attend conferences to do their jobs effectively.
The study also found that Web-based events are playing an increasingly important role in B-to-B marketing: 52 percent of decision makers use Web-based events; 90 percent attended or considered attending a Web-based event; 75 percent attended three or more Web-based events in the last year; 43 percent participated in a Web event or listened to a podcast instead of attending an in-person event; 41 percent participated in a Web-based event sponsored by a magazine they read; 66 percent say spending on Web-based events will increase in the next two years, while only 50 percent of marketers plan such an increase. * GLOBAL FACTOID: UFI – The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry just elected Cliff Wallace as President. Cliff is the Managing Director of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center and the first American to lead this global organization. I just returned from UFI’s 74th Annual Congress in Versailles, France. The sessions focused on the future of our industry and what we can expect in the years ahead: continued growth in most areas of the world, with Asia taking the lead. While it may be bumpy at times, face-to-face will be the big winner in the years ahead.

* GREEN EXHIBITIONS: AUMA, the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry, has been promoting green exhibits since the early 90s. Here’s a listing of exhibit elements that you can implement to contribute to a better environment: reusable decorative materials; energy saving equipment; high grade, reusable floor covering; modular construction; recyclable wall materials (no laminates); reusable graphics and display items; reusable packaging materials. * AMERICAN FACTOID: New York City is continuing its fight against obesity by reintroducing a measure to force chain restaurants to display calorie information on their menus. Most large chains have already complied with this good concept. (New York Times, 10/25/07)
* ROAD WARRIOR UPDATE: The costs of business trips will continue to rise in 2008, with hotel rooms at high occupancy levels, airline seating near capacity, and oil prices going up, up, up -- according to American Express Business Travel’s global forecast. Hotel prices in North America will rise, but at a slower pace than in recent years. (USAe News, 10/25/07)
