Windy City News
Bits from Bob, December 17, 2008
* MIXED END OF YEAR NEWS: The 2007 Tradeshow Week Survey of Corporate Exhibitors (10/29/07) is a bit sobering for the industry. It found that exhibitors are taking part in fewer shows, cutting some because of high costs, and finding ways to get more bang for their buck in the ones they keep. "It’s not that exhibitors are down on tradeshows – in fact, their results at them are great – it’s that they’re done wasting money that could be better-spent." The survey’s 123 respondents not only complained about the high price of exhibiting, 43 percent said escalating costs caused them to drop certain events from their schedule. The majority singled out materials handling costs as the main reason, with exhibit space rental costs not far behind. As for exhibiting budgets, most remained the same, while 37 percent increased and 15 percent decreased. Finally, 91 percent said their results from 2007 tradeshows were better than or about the same as those of 2006 – only 9 percent said they were worse. For the complete survey, check out www.tradeshowweek.com

* QUOTABLE: " ... We’re exhibiting smarter. We got rid of a lot of shows that were under-performing and increased the size of our exhibit at the ones that were performing well." Beth Weinstein, corporate event and tradeshow manager, Ocean Optics (Tradeshow Week 10/29/07)

* Chinese luv text msgs but h8 e-mail: Be aware that e-mail has become the new snail mail for the majority of wired young Chinese. They prefer the immediacy of text messages on cell phones and instant messages on computers. This is also a big trend among U.S. students and Gen Y. Seventy percent of China’s online population uses instant messaging, while 56 percent uses e-mail. In the United States, 39 percent uses instant messaging and 91 percent uses e-mail. (Los Angeles Times, 10/31/07) Marketing to your prospects and buyers in the years ahead is going to be a challenge – count on it!

* GLOBAL AUDIT GUIDES: UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, has always required its member organizers to provide independently audited statistics on visitors and exhibitors – in order to obtain its "Event Approval" label. UFI recently updated these guidelines and developed clear procedures to be applied by auditors in future data verification. Check them out at www.ufi.org.

* GREEN NEWS: Emily Moorehead, a spokeswoman for Canada’s Sierra Club, states that the emissions from one trip to Europe per airline passenger is equivalent to driving a car for a full year. She is promoting ground transportation for more efficient fuel use when traveling to domestic exhibitions and events.

* ROAD WARRIOR UPDATES: David Stempler, President of the Air Travelers Association, has some advice for airline passengers over the holiday season: "Follow the 3 'B's – Be Early, Be Informed, Be Prepared."

* The New York State Legislature recently ratified an "airline passenger bill of rights" (Meeting News, 9/10/07). Airlines are required to provide passengers with food, water, operating toilets, and fresh air whenever planes remain on the tarmac for more than three hours. Missing from the bill was the requirement to return to gates and disembark passengers in the event of long delays.

* AFTERWORD: "Life is not a 'having' and a 'getting;' but a 'being' and a 'becoming.'" Matthew Arnold

That’s it for December. Happy Holidaze to all! Peace!
